The Rainbow Portrait is one of the most enigmatic and celebrated depictions of Queen Elizabeth I, filled with symbolic elements that reflect her power, wisdom, and the political climate of her time. After an extensive restoration, the painting has returned to its rightful place at Hatfield House, and we invite you to join us in exploring its significance.

This exclusive event will feature talks from four eminent scholars and professionals:

  • Stephen Alford: A leading historian and author of several books on Tudor history. Stephen will explore the relationship between Robert Cecil and Queen Elizabeth I, and how the Rainbow Portrait reflects the complexities of the Elizabethan era.
  • Dr. Susan North: Curator of Fashion before 1800 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dr. North will provide insights into the fashion and symbolism represented in the Rainbow Portrait and broader Tudor fashion trends.
  • Karen Hearn FSA: Former Curator of 16th & 17th Century British Art at Tate Britain, Karen will discuss the various painters who were active in England around the time that the Rainbow Portrait was painted.
  • Nicole Ryder: A seasoned conservator, Nicole will share the fascinating process behind the recent restoration of the Rainbow Portrait, revealing the techniques and challenges involved in preserving this historical treasure.
