Hatfield Park Lecture Series: The Four Seasons Tapestries – Place and Context
The Four Seasons Tapestries, completed in the early 17th century, have graced the walls of Hatfield House for over 175 years. Join our panel of experts as we unravel the stories woven into their threads – from questions of attribution and origin, to their place in the art historical canon, and the meticulous conservation work undertaken in more recent years.

This exclusive event will feature talks from three eminent scholars and professionals:
- Helen Wyld: Helen is the Senior Curator of Historic Textiles at National Museums Scotland, with responsibility for Scottish and European textiles from the medieval period to 1850. Helen is a specialist in the history of tapestry in Britain and Europe, and her book The Art of Tapestry was published by Philip Wilson/The National Trust in 2022.
- Joan Kendall: qualified in Textile Design and Technology, Joan was trained in textile conservation techniques by members of the Textile Conservation Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She spent 38 years working at Hatfield House, with the valuable help of a group of trained, skilled volunteers, conserving a variety of historic textiles.
- Hilary L Turner MA DPhil: Dr Turner holds an Oxford MA and a doctorate in Modern History, which she says has proved to be good training for a life filled with publishing and puzzles, all related to historical, cartographic, architectural, and tapestry themes.
Arrival Time: From 6pm for a champagne reception in The Armoury.
Lecture: Starts at 6:30pm, followed by a Q&A session, concluding the event at 9pm.
