When Kilimanjaro Live, a leading live music and events promotions agency who stage over 700 diverse shows each year for artists such as Ed Sheeran and Sam Fender, contacted Hatfield Park in March 2023 to discuss their ideas around a new festival, their brief was very clear.
They wanted:
- An exceptional event with a strong message around sustainability and the environment
- A large scale space that was visually stunning
- A venue of natural beauty
- The perfect space to connect people with nature and to celebrate the sunset
- A festival that was completely different to the norm
- A knowledgeable on-site team who were aligned with Kilimanjaro’s vision
- Excellent public transport links to align with their sustainability goals
Kilimanjaro considered alternate venues but Hatfield Park was selected due to meeting all of the criteria stipulated in the brief.
Kilimanjaro’s client was Constellation Brands AB InBev and the event was designed to create brand awareness for Corona beer, a brand with its roots in the ocean and the world of surfing, and a strong ethos around the environment and sustainability. The festival was promoted via a comprehensive marketing campaign including retail store marketing, local TV and Radio, socials and out of home advertising.
The Corona Sunset concept was to create an environmentally-friendly series of amazing festivals globally, in areas of outstanding natural beauty, with stunning sunset views. Hatfield Park was the first venue in the UK to host the event. The event welcomed relaxation-seeking customers looking for a chilled out, lo fi atmosphere where they could socialise and participate to the soundtrack featuring some of the best artists and DJs on the scene. The event itself focused on the moment of the sunset and sought to envelope guests in the natural escape of the beautiful surroundings.
More than just a music festival, Corona Sunsets will also feature various experiences inspired by the sunset, from live art installations, to culinary experiences, all designed to encourage attendees to connect with nature at the golden hour. Working with the Kilimanjaro team on a particularly short time frame (six months) for a festival of this size, the Hatfield Park team delivered an event full of activities and experiences in line with the festival theme and target audience:
- Natural food – Michelin-starred chef Brad Carter, leading a workshop on bringing nature into your daily diet, from DIY herb gardens to urban foraging
- Breathwork sessions hosted by bestselling author and host of BBC Radio 1’s Decompression Session, Stuart Sandeman
- Plant growing and micro gardening workshop
- Body painting
- Tie-dying workshop
- Pledge wall – where festival goers made a commitment to make a change that would have a positive environmental impact
- Giant swings
- Choice of several bars
- Chill out spaces
The aesthetics of this event was key, and the teams worked hard to design an experience that was completely different to other festivals. Upon arrival at Hatfield Park main gates, guests were guided via a festoon-lit pathway through the Park, depicting a spiritual journey, meandering through the atmospheric woodlands and ancient trees through to a stunning reveal of the Mandala main stage, nestled within a natural ampitheatre within the Park. Artists playing on the Mandala and Chillout stages included Easy Life, Mahalia and Franc Moody.
