The design inspiration for the stunningly beautiful Knot Garden adjacent to the Old Palace at Hatfield Park is taken from Elizabethan patterns but was created in the 1980s. It consists of three knots and a maze and was originally designed to be viewed from above in order to appreciate the definitive lines of the hedges and plants within the garden.
The grassy banks surrounding the garden are carpeted with native spring flowers including primrose, cowslips and fritillaries, and of which are preserved to allow for maximum seeding.
The fountain is an eye-catching centre-piece and was added to the garden in 2004. It features a beautiful gold gilded stone cherub flourishing a trumpet, the design of which was inspired by an Italian Renaissance design for a garden fountain dating back to 1490.
Much research was conducted by the Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury prior to the creation of the garden in 1982, including a study of the books in the library at Hatfield House on gardens, gardening, and the plants of the period. The Marchioness also visited knot gardens of note for inspiration including the knot garden at All soul’s College, Oxford, and researched knot designs on Celtic crosses, in stone carvings, wood panelling and embroidery.
There is even a knot in an embroidered binding created by an eleven year old Princess Elizabeth which was gifted as a book cover to Catherine Parr, her beloved step mother. Perhaps it was embroidered when she was at Hatfield?
