SUMMARY:'Mother' Tank Memorial: Opening Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:A Memorial to ‘Mother’\, 110 Years On\nJoin us as we unveil a new memorial commemorating the first tank\, H.M.L.S. Centipede\, affectionately known as ‘Mother’\, at Hatfield Park\, where it underwent its earliest trials. \nOn 2nd January 1916\, Hatfield Park became the setting for a remarkable chapter in military history. Chosen for its varied terrain and privacy\, the Park was selected as a testing ground for an entirely new kind of machine and transformed into a recreated battlefield. Weeks later\, H.M.L.S. Centipede arrived at Hatfield Park to begin the first tank trials. \nOne hundred and ten years later\, we invite visitors and local residents to join us for the unveiling of a permanent memorial marking Hatfield Park’s role in the development of the tank and its place in Britain’s wartime story. \nThe memorial will be unveiled by General Sir James Everard and Lord Salisbury. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \n\nThe Hatfield Park Tank Trials\nIn early 1916\, the Park’s landscape was adapted to recreate the challenging conditions of the Western Front. Trenches\, parapets\, waterlogged ground and barbed wire obstacles were constructed to provide a realistic testing environment. \nOfficial trials began on 2nd February 1916 and were attended by some of the most influential political and military figures of the day\, including Lord Kitchener\, Arthur Balfour and David Lloyd George. King George V visited Hatfield on 8th February\, observing the tank in action and spending time inside the machine itself. \nThe success of the trials helped demonstrate the military potential of the tank\, establishing Hatfield Park’s place in one of the most significant developments of the First World War. \nIn recognition of the Estate’s contribution\, Winston Churchill presented the 4th Marquess of Salisbury with a Mark I tank in 1919. The tank remained at Hatfield Park until 1969\, when it was transferred to The Tank Museum at Bovington. \nDo you have memories of the tank at Hatfield Park? We’d love to hear them. DESCRIPTION:The Concept\nRight here at Hatfield Park – 4 great firework displays! Three of the UK’s best firework companies compete against each other with a 10 minute firework display choreographed to music followed by a larger huge finale display that isn’t part of the competition. \nThe types of fireworks being used by the companies are quite different to the material available to the general public\, each company uses category 4 fireworks – those that are for professional use only and the biggest available in the UK. \nThe event is the only one of its type in the UK where the audience have the capability to vote for the team they liked the most using their mobile phone. Texts will be charged at normal rates and a limit of 1 vote per number is in place. Each voting number receives a text back with the results. \n  \nFood & Drink\nThere will be food and drink (bar and soft drinks) available on site from licensed vendors\, however please feel free to bring your own. You may also bring a picnic and table/chairs. No BBQs are allowed on-site under any circumstances. \n  \nDisabled Access And Parking\nThe site can accommodate disabled guests\, though suitability may vary depending on individual circumstances. Rough ground and dark sections may be present\, for further advice\, please contact mail@fireworkdschampions.co.uk. There is a disabled car parking section – please inform the staff as you arrive and they will direct you accordingly. Signs for disabled parking will also be in place. \nAll parking is on flat\, grassy parkland. The distance from the car park to the concert entrance varies between 50 and 350 metres. As custodian of one of Britain’s finest historic houses\, he remains closely involved in the stewardship of the House\, Park\, Gardens and wider Estate\, offering a unique perspective on preserving this remarkable heritage for future generations. \nRobert Gascoyne Cecil\, 7th Marquess of Salisbury\, was educated at Eton and Oxford\, and succeeded his father as Marquess in 2003. Formerly a banker in California and London\, he served as Conservative MP for South Dorset with interests in foreign and constitutional affairs. Summoned to the Lords in 1992\, he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence\, Lord Privy Seal\, Leader of the House of Lords\, and later Opposition Leader. He is a Knight of the Garter\, and he chairs The London Defence Conference\, served as Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire\, and is Patron of The Sixteen. Like his long line of ancestors over the past 400 years\, he resides in Hatfield House\, and he and Lady Salisbury are closely involved in the management of the House\, Park\, Gardens\, and wider Estate. \n  \n \nDr Emily Cole FSA IHBC\nAn internationally respected architectural historian with more than 25 years’ experience at English Heritage and Historic England\, Dr Emily Cole specialises in Elizabethan and Jacobean country houses. Up until 2013\, she was Head of the Blue Plaques Team in London and is now a Senior Architectural Investigator based in Cambridge. She has published widely on this and other subjects\, including authoring an article on Theobalds\, Lord Burghley’s Hertfordshire home\, and co-authoring Apethorpe: The Story of an English Country House (2016). Emily is a Fellow and former Trustee of the Society of Antiquaries of London. \n  \n \nKate Harwood\nA respected researcher\, lecturer and writer specialising in historic gardens\, Kate Harwood has spent more than two decades advising on the conservation of historic parks and landscapes throughout Hertfordshire. Her expertise reveals how Hatfield’s celebrated gardens evolved and continue to inspire today. After completing an MA in Garden History\, she taught the subject at Birkbeck College and Cambridge University. She lectures on garden history across the country and has devised several courses on the subject. For the past 20 years\, she has been the Conservation & Planning Officer for the Hertfordshire Gardens Trust\, drawing on her knowledge of the county’s historic parks and gardens to inform planners and others. \n  \n \nAndrew Turvey\nAs Head of Park and Gardens\, Andrew Turvey combines practical stewardship with deep horticultural knowledge. His work caring for one of Britain’s most significant historic landscapes offers a fascinating contemporary perspective on managing an internationally important estate. \nAndrew has been Head of Park and Gardens at Hatfield Park since 2019. He originally joined the Estate in 2017 as Head Gardener\, following roles with the Royal Horticultural Society and English Heritage. DESCRIPTION:This Father’s Day\, celebrate someone special with a vibrant family‑friendly display of classic vehicles\, included in all day tickets on Sunday 21st June. \n\nChildren can enjoy the popular Mini Rovers experience\, tackling a specially designed off-road course for little learners in their own replica Series 2 Land Rover. Mini Rovers is suitable for children aged 4–10 years\, with each child required to be accompanied by an adult. There is also permanent seating if needed. \n  \nWhere can I stay updated about the events? \nFor the latest information and updates about the weekend’s events\, follow the Hatfield Park (@hatfield_park) and Old Hatfield Life (@oldhatfieldlife) Instagram accounts. \n  \nParking\nParking is available just across the Great North Road in the multi-storey car park. If you would like to park at Hatfield Park\, the Coach and Car Park (AL9 5HX for Sat Nav) is accessed through George’s Gate and is located a few hundred yards on from the Station Lodge entrance\, at the mini roundabout opposite the large Citroen dealership. \n\n*Free Ticket Offer (T&Cs): Visitors can collect their free day entry ticket to the Park and Gardens from Salisbury Square on Saturday\, 13th June. DESCRIPTION:Come and join Stepping Out for The Big Step Out. \nWe invite you to come along and help celebrate unpaid carers who provide so much unsung and yet crucial support for friends\, neighbours or family members. \nShare the excitement at Hatfield Park where the welcome is always warm. \nAt the event you can browse the stalls of an array of local organisations who provide wonderful offers of help\, entertainment & fun to carers and the people they care for on a year-round basis\, whilst enjoying the atmosphere and meeting some special people. You can then enjoy your own stunning walk around the park and gardens. \nStepping Out has had a wonderful relationship with Hatfield Park ever since their first walk here in 2018 and their hugely successful walk and festival in 2025. \nEntry costs: Tickets are available at a cost of £10\, which includes discounted entry to the gardens and festival for carers.
