SUMMARY:Introduction to Historic Brick Masonry Repair
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hatfield Park for this two day hands-on course. You will learn the essentials of historic brickwork repair from Lynn Mathias\, one of the country’s leading experts in traditional brickwork. \n\n\nThrough a combination of live demonstrations and hands-on sessions\, you will learn how to assess\, prepare\, and repair traditional brick walls. You will come away with the ability to identify and repair damage to historic brickwork to retain the beauty and structural integrity of your masonry\, while staving off further decay. \nYou will be working on sections of a low 19th century boundary wall and helping to conserve what remains of a historic farmyard wall at Home Farm on the Hatfield Park Estate.  Here you’ll have plenty of opportunities to try out your new skills on real historic masonry\, all under Lynn Mathias’s expert guidance and supervision. \nAlthough this is an introductory course\, you should come away from it with the confidence to identify and remedy defects and failures typically found in historic brick masonry\, and to carry out good\, honest brickwork repairs using traditional lime mortar. \n\n  \n\n \n  \n\n\nWho is this course for?\nThis is an introductory or intermediate level course aimed at building professionals and craftspeople seeking to work with or better understand traditional brick masonry. It is also suitable for building owners and caretakers keen to learn more about how to maintain and repair historic brickwork. \n  \nYou will learn\nBy the end of this course you will be able to: \n\nUnderstand and identify the characteristics (age\, type\, colour\, texture) of bricks used in historic brick structures.\nAssess historic brick walls to determine what\, if any\, interventions are needed.\nIdentify defects commonly found in historic brickwork.\nUnderstand the various materials\, tools and techniques used in the repair and conservation of historic brick masonry.\nPrepare a repair specification for remedial works.\nSelect and mix appropriate lime mortar.\nRemove decayed or defective bricks and replace with new like-for-like substitutes.\nSelect appropriate brick replacements\, matching colour\, texture and type.\nCarry out remedial work to brick masonry\, including pointing\, jointing and joint finishes.\n\n\n  \n \n\n  \nYou will need\n\nPlease wear overalls or working clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty\, and flat\, enclosed footwear\, ideally steel toe-capped boots. All other PPE is provided.\nThe work will involve kneeling so you may wish to wear knee pads or bring a suitable kneeler cushion.\nWe will mostly be outside\, so we recommend you wear warm layers and bring waterproofs in case of rain.\n\n  \nFurther information\n\nFree parking is available at the main visitor car park (AL9 5HX)\, where we will meet at the start of each day.\nFrom there we will car share to the site\, where there is limited parking.\nThere are toilet and handwashing facilities on site.\nA light lunch will be provided. Please indicate any dietary requirements in the booking form.\n\n\n  \n \n\n  \nTutors\nLynn Mathias\, Lead Tutor\nLynn is a brick and flint specialist\, a former SPAB Guardian and founder of Mathias Brick and Flint  He has worked with brick and flint in the conservation sector for over 30 years and teaches at West Dean College. Lynn has taught many of our brickwork and flint courses and sat on our Education and Training Committee from 2020 to 2025. \nMyles Mathias\, Assistant Tutor\nMyles is Lynn’s son and has been repairing historic buildings for over eight years since leaving school. He has gained a City and Guilds qualification in brickwork and is an accomplished Flint Knapper. Emily is a Fellow and former Trustee of the Society of Antiquaries of London. \n  \n \nKate Harwood \nKate Harwood is a researcher\, writer\, and speaker on historic gardens. After completing an MA in Garden History\, she taught the subject at Birkbeck College and Cambridge University. She lectures on garden history across the country and has devised several courses on the subject. For the past 20 years\, she has been the Conservation & Planning Officer for the Hertfordshire Gardens Trust\, using her knowledge of the historic parks and gardens in the county and beyond to inform planners and others. \n  \n \nAndrew Turvey \nAndrew Turvey has been Head of Park and Gardens at Hatfield Park since 2019. He originally joined the Estate in 2017 as Head Gardener\, following roles with the Royal Horticultural Society and English Heritage. Andrew has 30 years’ experience in horticulture and landscape management\, with a particular focus on heritage gardens and sustainable practices. He leads a team responsible for the care and development of Hatfield’s historic Park and Gardens\, and plays a key role in supporting the Estate’s environmental and community initiatives. \n  \n \nLord Charles Cecil \nLord Charles Cecil is a younger brother to the current Marquess of Salisbury. He grew up between Hatfield and the family Estate in Cranborne\, Dorset\, and now lives in Hatfield Park\, where he and his wife enjoy gardening. His mother was a leading gardener of her generation\, designing gardens in the UK\, Ireland\, France\, Italy and the US\, as well as at Hatfield and Cranborne. An authority on garden history\, especially Elizabethan and Jacobean gardens\, she was also an eminent plantswoman who generously shared her knowledge\, which Charles and his wife have benefitted from. He is a former President of the Silver Society\, Consultant Curator at the V&A\, and a trustee of the Wallace Collection. He has served two terms as Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company. His publications include British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum (2009) and ‘A Marvel to Behold’\, Gold and Silver at the Court of Henry VIII (2020). \n  \n \nDr Susan Bracken\, FSA \nDr Susan Bracken continues to research aspects of seventeenth-century collecting. She is one of the convenors of the seminar Collecting & Display at the Institute of Historical Research and has co-edited six books on collecting and display. She lectures regularly at the Victoria & Albert Museum and elsewhere and is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars. \n  \n \nTom White \nTom White is a Psychology PhD researcher at the University of Warwick and an avid collector\, with collections ranging from Lego models to Listerine mouthwash. His research investigates how self and social identities\, individual differences\, and perceptions of value shape the decisions people make about collectible consumer products. \n  \nTicket Prices\n£50 per person \nFree entry is available for carers if accompanying the person they care for. DESCRIPTION:Willow’s annual 10K event is a great race for beginners\, experienced runners and walkers\, taking place through the picturesque grounds of Hatfield House. It also includes our 5K race and 1.8km Family Fun Run. \nRun or walk as our marshals cheer you along\, and this year we’ve lined up some extra entertainment to keep you going. \nThe Willow 10K is a fundraising event\, and we encourage everyone to raise as much as they can. An online fundraising page will be set up for you as part of your registration. \nThe scenic course takes you through the stunning grounds of Hatfield House\, providing a unique opportunity to explore hidden parts of the Estate not normally open to the public.
