DESCRIPTION:The Concept\nRight here at Hatfield Park – 4 great firework displays! Three of the UK’s best firework companies compete against each other with a 10 minute firework display choreographed to music followed by a larger huge finale display that isn’t part of the competition. \nThe types of fireworks being used by the companies are quite different to the material available to the general public\, each company uses category 4 fireworks – those that are for professional use only and the biggest available in the UK. \nThe event is the only one of its type in the UK where the audience have the capability to vote for the team they liked the most using their mobile phone. Texts will be charged at normal rates and a limit of 1 vote per number is in place. Each voting number receives a text back with the results. \n  \nFood & Drink\nThere will be food and drink (bar and soft drinks) available on site from licensed vendors\, however please feel free to bring your own. You may also bring a picnic and table/chairs. No BBQs are allowed on-site under any circumstances. \n  \nDisabled Access And Parking\nThe site can accommodate disabled guests\, though suitability may vary depending on individual circumstances. SUMMARY:'Mother' Tank Memorial: Opening Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:A Memorial to ‘Mother’\, 110 Years On\nJoin us as we unveil a new memorial commemorating the first tank\, H.M.L.S. Centipede\, affectionately known as ‘Mother’\, at Hatfield Park\, where it underwent its earliest trials. \nOn 2nd January 1916\, Hatfield Park became the setting for a remarkable chapter in military history. Chosen for its varied terrain and privacy\, the Park was selected as a testing ground for an entirely new kind of machine and transformed into a recreated battlefield. Weeks later\, H.M.L.S. Centipede arrived at Hatfield Park to begin the first tank trials. \nOne hundred and ten years later\, we invite visitors and local residents to join us for the unveiling of a permanent memorial marking Hatfield Park’s role in the development of the tank and its place in Britain’s wartime story. \nThe memorial will be unveiled by General Sir James Everard and Lord Salisbury. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \n\nThe Hatfield Park Tank Trials\nIn early 1916\, the Park’s landscape was adapted to recreate the challenging conditions of the Western Front. Trenches\, parapets\, waterlogged ground and barbed wire obstacles were constructed to provide a realistic testing environment. \nOfficial trials began on 2nd February 1916 and were attended by some of the most influential political and military figures of the day\, including Lord Kitchener\, Arthur Balfour and David Lloyd George. King George V visited Hatfield on 8th February\, observing the tank in action and spending time inside the machine itself. \nThe success of the trials helped demonstrate the military potential of the tank\, establishing Hatfield Park’s place in one of the most significant developments of the First World War. \nIn recognition of the Estate’s contribution\, Winston Churchill presented the 4th Marquess of Salisbury with a Mark I tank in 1919. The tank remained at Hatfield Park until 1969\, when it was transferred to The Tank Museum at Bovington. \nDo you have memories of the tank at Hatfield Park? We’d love to hear them. This places the objects at the heart of one of the great collecting dynasties of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Their origins and the circumstances in which they were acquired remain uncertain. \nThis sense of uncertainty adds to their enduring fascination\, raising questions about taste\, status\, and collecting culture in the early modern world. \nBook tickets \n\nMeet your speakers\n \nTimothy Schroder \nTimothy Schroder is one of Britain’s leading historians and lecturers on silver\, goldsmiths’ work\, and the culture of display\, making him ideally placed to explore the wider world of princely and aristocratic collecting. A Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, he is a former President of the Silver Society\, a former Consultant Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, and a former trustee of The Wallace Collection. He has also served two terms as Prime Warden of The Goldsmiths’ Company\, reflecting a career at the forefront of scholarship and connoisseurship. His publications include British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean Museum (2009) and ‘A Marvel to Behold’: Gold and Silver at the Court of Henry VIII (2020)\, both of which explore the prestige and meaning of precious objects in historic collections. \n  \n \nDr Susan Bracken\, FSA \nDr Susan Bracken is a distinguished scholar of seventeenth-century collecting whose work has deepened our understanding of how objects were acquired\, displayed\, and valued in the early modern period. She is co-convenor of Collecting & Display\, the long-running seminar at the Institute of Historical Research\, and has co-edited six books on the topic. Dr Bracken also lectures regularly at the Victoria and Albert Museum and elsewhere\, bringing together rigorous research with a gift for making complex histories engaging and accessible. As a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars\, she has both academic authority and a deep understanding of the intellectual and cultural world in which collections such as Hatfield Park’s were formed. \n  \n \nTom White \nTom White is a Psychology PhD researcher at the University of Warwick whose work explores a question at the heart of this event: why do we collect? Drawing on both academic research and personal experience as an avid collector\, whose collections range from Lego models to Listerine mouthwash\, he investigates how self and social identities\, individual differences\, and perceptions of value shape the decisions people make about collectable consumer products. His research considers the psychological forces behind collecting behaviour\, from self-expression and social belonging to rarity\, meaning\, and attachment. His music is heard alongside that of Byrd\, Lawes and their contemporaries\, placing audiences in direct conversation with the rich musical life of the House. \nThe Festival welcomes back distinguished artists and long-standing friends\, including The Sixteen\, Magnus Johnston and colleagues\, Iestyn Davies\, Julian Bliss and his quintet\, and Sir András Schiff. It also welcomes for the first time Fretwork\, Seth Schultheis\, Oliver Wass\, and The Academy of St Martin in the Fields String Ensemble with Timothy Ridout. \nThe programme includes the world première of a new work by Sir James MacMillan\, composed especially for Lord Salisbury as part of this year’s celebrations. \n  \nLearning & Participation\nThe Learning and Participation programme remains central to the Festival.
